Welcome to the Year 3 page for Classes 3A and 3B at The Rosary Catholic Primary School!
Here you will find updates about what we have been learning, links to support home learning, and access to the online platforms we use to practise and strengthen our skills. In Year 3, children begin their journey into Key Stage 2, taking greater responsibility for their learning while continuing to build confidence in reading, writing, and maths. We also enjoy exploring new subjects such as history, geography, and science in more depth, making connections to our Catholic faith and values as we grow together as a school community.
Religious Education
In Year 3, our Religious Education curriculum follows the six branches outlined in the Religious Education Directory (RED). Building on the strong foundations laid in Years 1 and 2, where children learned about God’s creation, His promises, and the life and teachings of Jesus, Year 3 pupils continue to deepen their understanding of Scripture, the Church, and their personal relationship with God. Each branch helps children explore the Catholic faith through meaningful stories, reflection, discussion, and prayer.
Autumn Term
Branch 1: Creation and Covenant
Children explore how God reveals Himself through creation and His covenant with His people. They learn about key figures in the Old Testament and reflect on how we are called to care for God’s world and one another.
Branch 2: Prophecy and Promise ✨
Pupils learn about the prophets who prepared the way for the coming of Jesus. They explore God’s promises and the hope that the Messiah brings to the world.
Spring Term
Branch 3: Galilee to Jerusalem 🚶♂️
Children study the teachings and miracles of Jesus, understanding how His life and ministry show God’s love in action. They reflect on how they can live out Jesus’ message in their own lives.
Branch 4: Desert to Garden 🌺
This branch focuses on Lent and Easter. Pupils explore the themes of repentance, forgiveness, and renewal, recognising the significance of Jesus’ death and resurrection for all people.
Summer Term
Branch 5: To the Ends of the Earth ✈️
Children learn how the disciples spread the Good News after Pentecost. They reflect on the mission of the Church today and how they, too, can share Jesus’ message through kindness, service, and faith.
Branch 6: Dialogue and Encounter 💬
Pupils learn about other faith traditions, showing respect for those with different beliefs. They explore how dialogue and understanding help build peace and unity in our world.
Through these six branches, Year 3 children continue to grow in faith, knowledge, and love of God, developing a deeper sense of belonging to the Church and their global community.
✝️ Year 3 Religious Education Knowledge Organisers 📖
To support your child’s RE learning in Year 3, each half term, we provide a Knowledge Organiser. These helpful guides summarise key facts, Scripture references, vocabulary, and core beliefs linked to each branch of the RED curriculum. They also include big questions to encourage deeper thinking and reflection about faith and the world around us.
You can use the Knowledge Organiser at home to:
-
Read and discuss Bible stories together, encouraging your child to explain what they teach us about God and His people.
-
Explore key vocabulary and talk about how these words connect to faith, worship, and everyday life.
-
Ask reflective questions such as “What does this story tell us about God’s love?” or “How can we live like Jesus today?”
-
Encourage your child to make links between what they learn in RE and their experiences at home, in school, or in the wider world.
-
Revisit previous branches to help strengthen memory and deepen understanding across the year.
By using the Knowledge Organiser regularly, children build confidence in discussing their faith, develop their understanding of Scripture and Church teaching, and grow in their awareness of how they can live out Gospel values in daily life.
🙏 Supporting Religious Education Learning at Home ⛪
To help your child explore their Religious Education learning at home, we have provided links to videos, animations, and prayers that support the six branches of the RED curriculum. These resources include Bible stories, reflections, and child-friendly explanations that bring Scripture and key themes to life.
You can use them to:
-
Revisit and reflect on Bible stories and topics explored in class.
-
Discuss key messages and vocabulary, encouraging your child to share their thoughts and understanding.
-
Pray together as a family, using the videos and prayers to reflect on God’s love and presence in everyday life.
-
Make learning meaningful and enjoyable through interactive videos and short animations that spark curiosity and faith.
By regularly using these resources at home, your child will deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith, strengthen their connection to Jesus’ teachings, and see how faith can be lived out through kindness, prayer, and reflection.

Learning Overview
Online Learning Platforms
Accelerated Reader – Access Accelerated Reader here
Accelerated Reader is a programme that helps children develop their reading skills and understanding of the books they read. Once your child has completed the Read Write Inc Phonics programme, they will begin bringing home Accelerated Reader books, which are carefully levelled and colour-stickered to match their reading ability.
-
At home, your child can:
-
Read their Accelerated Reader book (or a book on myON, our online library).
-
Complete a short comprehension quiz online about the book they have read.
-
Track their progress and celebrate their achievements as they move through the levels.
These quizzes check how well your child has understood their reading and help teachers to see the progress they are making. The more they read and quiz, the more confident and fluent they will become as readers.
-
myON – Access myON here
myON is our online library, giving children access to a wide range of age-appropriate eBooks that can be read at home and in school. Each book is linked to the Accelerated Reader programme, which means children can quiz on the books they read in myON just like they do with their colour-stickered Accelerated Reader books.
Children can:
-
Choose from thousands of digital books tailored to their reading level.
-
Enjoy fiction and non-fiction texts to broaden their knowledge and interests.
-
Take Accelerated Reader quizzes after reading to check their understanding.
myON helps children develop a love of reading by giving them choice and variety, while also supporting progress in comprehension.
Times Tables Rockstars (TT Rockstars) – Log in to TT Rockstars here
TT Rockstars is an online maths platform designed to help children practise and master their times tables in a fun and engaging way. Through quick-fire games, challenges, and competitions, children become faster and more confident with multiplication and division facts.
Children can:
-
Log in at home to practise times tables at their own pace.
-
Play in different game modes, either individually or against friends.
-
Earn coins and rewards as they improve their speed and accuracy.
Fluency in times tables is an essential skill in maths, and TT Rockstars helps children gain the confidence they need to use them in their learning every day.
We encourage children to use these platforms regularly at home to build fluency and confidence in their reading and maths skills.

Power of Reading
At the Rosary Catholic Primary School, we recognise language as a gift from God and a powerful tool for communication, reflection, and understanding. Through the study of high-quality texts, pupils are encouraged to develop empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation of diverse perspectives and values that reflect the Gospel message at the heart of our school. English provides opportunities for children to express their beliefs, explore moral themes, and use their voices with confidence and compassion, promoting truth, justice, and the common good. In doing so, we help pupils grow into kind, thoughtful individuals who use their God-given gifts to transform the world around them.
Mathematics
The fundamental purpose of Maths is the pursuit of truth, reflecting the order and wisdom of God’s creation. The skills developed through Maths - creative, critical, and analytical thinking - enable learners to use their God-given talents to serve others. Exploring the beauty and harmony of mathematics helps learners engage with something greater than themselves, inspiring them to be forerunners, trailblazers, and inventors who contribute to the common good. Grounding learning in real-world contexts encourages responsible application of knowledge, reflecting Catholic values of stewardship and service.
Science
Through science, we recognise the world as God’s creation - a gift entrusted to us to explore, wonder at, and care for. Through scientific enquiry, children deepen their appreciation of the complexity, beauty, and order of creation, learning that we are stewards of the Earth with a responsibility to use our knowledge wisely. The Plymouth Science scheme supports this by encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and respect for life, all rooted in the dignity of the human person and the call to care for our common home.
Humanities
Through Geography and History, children explore people, places, and our shared world through the lens of Catholic teaching. In Geography, pupils learn about the environment and how humans interact with it, understanding that we are stewards of God’s creation and called to care for the common good. In History, pupils reflect on past events and human decisions, considering their moral and ethical impact on society. Together, these subjects help children appreciate the gift of creation, understand their responsibility to others, and inspire them to make thoughtful, positive contributions guided by Catholic values.
